Make
Me Smile Newsletter November 09
Make me Smile is delighted to announce that as of 5th October 2009 we have been officially granted Charity status by the Charity Commission for England and Wales. Our charity number is 1131986.
This is very exciting news as we will now be able to support the Malimba School in many more varied ways than we have already.
Our inaugural fund raising endeavour was a huge success. The 'Out of Africa' Event raised a spectacular £16,000 for Make Me Smile. Our grateful thanks go out to everyone who gave up so much of their time to make this event such a resounding success. Thanks most of all go to every one of you who donated so much in ticket sales, tombola prizes, the auction and the grand raffle.
Our evening opened with Vox Zambezi, a chamber choir of 14 members from Zambia who set the scene .They very kindly performed for us without charge slotting us into their hectic schedule en-route from a concert at Ely Cathedral to London. Thank you Vox you were fab!
We also thank Polenka our international Salsa group who provided more live music at a special charity fee. Congratulations also to Paul who provided a magnificent and very professional disco especially for the charity. Paul managed to keep us all dancing well into the early hours!
Keeping in the theme of Africa we dined on delicious curries, bobota and many other mouth watering dishes all thanks to Joe Navro who worked tirelessly through the night and days before. Champagne and wine were flowing thanks to Barrington and Sara's team, all who gave their time and effort to produce a night to remember. So many people who worked so hard. Thank you, thank everyone for all your time and effort and money and for being there to support Jojo's event.
Now we have ' grown up ' and are a charity we are in a better position to raise regular monies by gift Aid and sponsorship. We are in a much better position to ensure that the school can maintain it’s self and slowly grow having the confidence and security of regular support. Her are some figures to think about:
| • |
£5.00 per week
|
This will feed a child at school for a week |
| • |
£17.00 per week
|
This will cover the costs of a teacher |
| • |
£10.00 per week
|
Will pay for essentials, stationery etc. |
We have had sad news only last week. Violet Kamanga was the acting Deputy Head
and qualified as a teacher in 2007. Her training cost £2,000 - a two year course.
She worked on a voluntary basis earning only a small allowance, a truly dedicated
teacher; she worked for the love of the children and the community. She was
expecting a baby but was taken ill unexpectedly and died. They could not save
the baby. We can forward monies from the July event; but it is in these situations
that regular donations could so help the survival of the school and enable more
dedicated volunteers from the local villages to be trained. It costs £2,000 to
train and £68 per month to keep and pay for a qualified teacher. Qualified teachers
mean Government recognition and therefore Government aid.
On a more cheerful note we are glad to say the school is thriving. At the end of this month, Bryn, one of the Trustees of the Charity is paying a visit to Zambia and the School. He will be coming back with up to date news and photos, so that we can all see what has been achieved and where your monies have been spent. Keep in touch!
